Sleeping Would Be Easy With These 5 Miracle Foods
It goes without saying that sleep is very important in our life. Besides, lack of sleep can make us feel groggy and tired. If that’s not enough, sleeplessness can ruin your concentration while driving and even affect your productivity at work. Unfortunately, not many people are blessed with the luxury of a good night’s sleep. After all, some people are constantly having trouble sleeping due to work stress or personal matter. So, what can you do to get those precious shut-eye? Well, sleeping pills may help you fall asleep. But if you are relying on them frequently, it might do you more harm than good due to possible side effects such as stomach upset, constipation and daytime drowsiness. Fortunately, there are some foods that may help you settle down for a quality slumber. Keep on reading below to find out more.
a) Warm milk
Perhaps your mum or your grandma are right all along. It isn’t an old wives’ tale, because drinking a glass of warm milk can somehow help you sleep better due to the presence of tryptophan. Often found in many dairy products, this essential amino acid produces a brain chemical known as serotonin, which in turn, helps promote relaxation and sedating effect.
b) Cheese and cracker
Here’s another dairy product that might help you falling into a slumber land. This is because cheese contains tryptophan, while the cracker (particularly, whole-grain cracker) has carbohydrate that helps boost the tryptophan effect to help your body unwind and de-stress.
c) Chamomile tea
Tea, particularly chamomile tea, has been widely promoted as an ideal bedtime drink for – you guessed it – a good night’s sleep. Although it isn’t exactly proven scientifically, it does has that calming effect when you take a sip of such warm liquid like chamomile tea. Besides, chamomile tea is a flower-based tea that releases a nice whiff of aroma upon brewing them in a teapot or a cup. Moreover, it contains no caffeine.
d) Tart cherry juice
According to a research from Louisiana State University, drinking two glasses of 0.23 litre/236.5 mililitre of tart cherry juice each day (morning & evening) may help you fall asleep. This is because tart cherry juice contains a natural source of melatonin and tryptophan – two compounds that promote shut-eye. For those who often suffer from insomnia may consider drinking tart cherry juice as well. Alternatively, you can choose to eat fresh cherries to help regulate your sleep cycles effectively.
e) Bananas
Bananas aren’t just for monkeys and… minions. Believe it or not, this elongated yellow fruit helps promote sleep. Why? Because bananas contain two essential compounds – potassium and magnesium – which are known as natural muscle relaxants. Plus, bananas also contain tryptophan! Even if you feel bored eating bananas all the time, you can opt to blend them instead. All you have to do is blend half or one ripe/frozen banana with 1 tablespoon of almond butter and ½ cup of almond milk/soy milk until smooth and creamy. It’s a wonderful bedtime drink worth trying for.
Keep in mind that the sleep remedies above varies from person to person. Of course, if your sleeping problem persists, it’s best to consult your doctor to find out the root of your actual cause.
