Introducing “Custom-Build” Burgers in Kuala Lumpur
About three to four years ago, I’m sure you have seen how most Malaysians have gone gaga over the gourmet burger craze. You know, those premium burgers made of soft & fluffy toasted bun, succulent homemade meat patty, cheddar cheese, fresh lettuce and whatnot. Local gourmet burger pioneers such as Wangsa Maju’s Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw and Seapark’s myBurgerLab have garnered enormous popularities that quickly inspired countless other burger joints mushrooming in and around the Klang Valley region alone.
While gourmet burger still has its place in the heart of many Malaysians, there’s a new burger trend in town. That trend in question is custom-build burgers! Yes, you read it right. You no longer have to settle with fixed burger selections offered in the menu, because you can now customise your very own burger instead! How cool is that?
Except, of course, this custom-build burger trend is not available on every burger joint. As of now, there are TWO places you can get your hands on this custom-build burgers. Ready? Wipe your mouth because here goes:
The Counter @ Pavilion KL
Hailed all the way from Culver City, California, The Counter recently opened its first Malaysian outlet at Pavilion KL in late April this year. Unlike your average gourmet burger joint, The Counter embraces a new concept where you get to customise your burger that suit your taste bud. How does it work, you say? Well, it’s pretty easy and straightforward.
First, you have to choose your burger. It could be a burger on the bun or served in a bowl via salad style. Then there are five choices of patties including beef, tuna, turkey, chicken breast or vegan veggie.
Next up, choose your favourite cheese. Now, if you love cheese, the selection here is certainly heavenly! Here, you can go simple with cheddar cheese or try something different such as Danish Blue Cheese, Greek Feta or Jalapeno Jack.
The third step is the sauce. No, we are not talking about the same old boring chilli or tomato sauce. But rather a variety of interesting sauces such as apricot sauce, Country Buttermilk Ranch, Honey Dijon and Sesame Ginger Dressing.
Fourth, choose your favourite toppings ranging from coleslaw, sliced red onions to quinoa and sunny side-up egg. Believe it or not, the toppings alone contain more than 40 choices!
Finally, the last two steps are selecting your type of bun (e.g. English muffin or sourdough) and side dishes (e.g. shoestring fries, quinoa salad or crispy onion strings).

Built Custom Burgers @ Nu Sentral
If The Counter is a fine-dining version of build-your-own-burger concept, then Built Custom Burgers is equivalent to a fast food variant!
The drill is more of the same. You choose your protein a.k.a. patty (beef, turkey, vegan veggie or chicken), followed by cheese and bun or served in a bowl. The rest includes choosing your side, toppings and sauce.
Being a fast food version of The Counter, your custom burger will be built on the spot as you go! It’s just like ordering a sandwich from Subway, except this one comes in a burger form.
