Uniqlo is a name known to many. We know Uniqlo for their quality, fashionable and comfortable clothing at reasonable prices but some of us are clueless when it comes to the origins of this world-renowned brand. To enlighten you guys a little, here’s a little information and history about Uniqlo’s brand. Uniqlo is actually a Japanese casual wear manufacturer, designer and retailer which have operations in 14 countries internationally, including Japan. Although Uniqlo has only recently shot to fame across Southeast Asia, it was actually founded over 60 years ago in 1949 and was then known as Ogori Shoji. In 1991, the founder of Ogori Shoji changed the company’s name to Fast Retailing and by 1994, Fast Retailing had over 100 Uniqlo stores operating across Japan.
Here’s a fun fact: Uniqlo and Fast Retailing’s founder, Tadashi Yanai is the richest and most successful man in Japan with a net worth of about $13.8 billion (that’s approximately RM15 billion!). Uniqlo is the primary subsidiary owned by Fast Retailing Co., Ltd which also owns several other brands such as Theory and J Brand. So, why the name Uniqlo and how did it come about? Interestingly, Uniqlo is a combination of the words “unique” and “clothing”. The company was going to be registered as “uni-clo” but during registration, the staff in charge misread the letter “C” as “Q”, hence the name Uniqlo!). There are close to 35 Uniqlo store outlets across Malaysia located in mostly shopping malls such as Mid Valley Megamall, Sunway Pyramid and Fahrenheit in the Klang Valley, Dataran Pahlawan in Melaka, and Queensbay Mall and Gurney Plaza in Penang. This way, you’ll never have to worry about traveling far and wide to get something you love from Uniqlo. Here’s a full list of stores in Malaysia and across the world. You can also view each store’s location and contact numbers.

Uniqlo Malaysia Collaborations
Uniqlo is very well known for its collaborations with local to international designers and pop culture genres. This product category is known as UT, where designers, pop culture genres, film and more collaborated with Uniqlo to produce some of the coolest t-shirts on Planet Earth. They believe that UT empowers the freedom of expression for one’s own individuality! One of their more recent collaborations is with New York-based contemporary artist-cum-designer Brian Donnelly (professionally known as KAWS) and is a big hit among the younger customers who are looking for casual clothing with a slightly modern edge. Besides KAWS, Uniqlo has collaborated with big names Disney (Pixar and Alice in Wonderland), Star Wars, Liberty London, Lemaire, Hana Tajima, Lego, Marvel (Captain America: Civil War), LINE Friends and Bonne Maison to name a few.
Does Uniqlo Malaysia Have an Online Store?
Yes, of course! Unknown to many, Uniqlo actually has their very own online store selling whatever is available in their brick and mortar stores across Malaysia. Also unknown to many is that the prices of their products are cheaper when customers shop via Uniqlo’s official website or mobile app. At their online store, there are constantly ongoing promotions such as value buy, limited offer, online exclusive and mobile members special which can’t be found in their stores. However, many still prefer the physical stores to their online store because at brick and mortar stores, customers get to try touch and try the attire they are planning to purchase whereas they can’t do the same if they shop online. To combat this, Uniqlo has provided a size chart for easier measurement and to ensure that the size that the customer purchases will fit like a glove. In case you’re unsatisfied with your purchase, you can always return your items within 30 days of purchase. However, do take note on their return and exchange policy. Another perk is the free shipping, customers need to spend just RM200 to enjoy free delivery to their doorstep.
And because Uniqlo is a name known to those of all ages, it is not surprising if many choose to build their career at Uniqlo or Fast Retailing. Feel free to walk in to their store to submit your resume if you’re interested to work as store staff or refer here for more information. Here’s a video of Hazwan who joined the Uniqlo Manager Candidate Program (UMC) in 2013 and is now a store manager of Plaza Singapura’s outlet in Singapore.
