6 Coffee Hacks You Should Know About

Coffee... can’t live with it, can’t without it. Okay, not all of us. But let’s face it, most of us Malaysians are accustomed to these daily caffeine fix to get us throughout the day. This is especially true for most working professionals. Whether we choose to drink a cup of java first thing in the morning, mid-afternoon or during late nights while clocking overtime, coffee is easily one of the most widely-consumed caffeinated beverages that help us stay alert and feeling all perked up.

Now, there are many ways you can enjoy a coffee beverage. It can be as simple as using 3-in-1 instant coffee powder, brewing ground beans from a coffee machine or purchase one from a Mamak restaurant or famous coffee chains like Starbucks. However, if you love to brew your own coffee and want to know more about how to improve or improvise the flavour, we got six easy hacks that might interest you!

1. Freeze Your Coffee

Who doesn’t love a tall glass of iced coffee? Not only it’s a refreshing drink best consumed during the hot weather, but also easy to make. All you have to do is pour your favourite coffee into a glass. Top up with a few ice cubes and there you go, your iced coffee is ready to drink! Easy, right? But the downside is, your iced coffee will be diluted once the ice starts to melt away. By then, it doesn’t taste as good as the first time around. Fortunately, there is a simple trick for maintaining the flavour of your iced coffee. Here’s what you can do: pour leftover or a fresh batch of coffee into an ice tray and freeze them like you normally do for the ice cubes. That way, your iced coffee still tastes good even though the coffee-flavoured ice cubes starts to melt.

2. Substitute Sugar With Cinnamon

Everyone knows that sugar is a commonly-used sweetener to flavour a coffee beverage. But, what if you are looking to cut down your sugar intake or you’re coincidentally running out of sugar? Well, if you have a small bottle of cinnamon powder stored in the kitchen rack or cabinet, use it to sprinkle a few into your coffee. You can even consider bringing this handy ingredient to your office as well. Not only a dash of cinnamon gives you the necessary sweetness, but also added a boost of spiced flavour to your coffee.

3. Use Filtered Water

Whether you realise it or not, how a coffee tastes like is depends on the type of water you going to use. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to forego the quality of the coffee. It still matters, but so do the importance of the water source used to brew a cup of coffee. Let’s say you use the regular tap water and finds out there’s an unpleasant chlorine aftertaste, consider using filtered water or bottled water instead.

4. Butter Up Your Coffee

Ever heard of a trendy caffeinated beverage known as “bulletproof coffee”? For the record, it has literally nothing to do with bullets but actually refers to the combination of coffee and butter. As weird as it sounds, adding butter to your coffee gives you a positive boost of energy without the usual mid-day slump. In fact, sipping bulletproof coffee every morning can help you burn fat and loses weight. But of course, not all butter is applicable to these aforementioned benefits. If you are looking to “bulletproof” your coffee, only grass-fed butter works the best. Among the most popular brands you can find in certain high-end supermarkets are Anchor (not the beer) and Kerrygold.

5. Add Salt To Reduce Bitterness

Can’t stand the bitterness of your coffee? You can always add sugar or milk to sweeten your coffee. But there is another way you might consider trying: just add a pinch of salt to make your coffee, well, drinkable to your taste bud. Not only it helps counteract the bitterness of your coffee, but also make your coffee tastes pleasant. Just don’t add too much, though. You just don’t want to consume a salty coffee, do you?

6. Top Up Your Coffee With An Ice Cream

Okay, adding ice cream to a coffee is actually nothing new. In fact, it has a name in it and it calls “affogato”. Other than that, you can consider putting a scoop or two of your favourite ice cream (vanilla works the best!) atop your cold coffee to make a delicious coffee float.

Now that you know there are many possible ways to “hack” your coffee, you no longer have to limit yourself with the same old coffee routine!
